Song 1 by Doug Aitken
Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC
It’s kinda mesmerizing . . . To be outside surrounded by darkness, watching huge images flash before you on a massive concrete cylindrical building — explosions of color, ripples of water, dancing silhouettes, singing faces (including actress Tilda Swinton), whirring reel-to-reel tape machines, lit matches aligned like soldiers, hauntingly empty factories and more . . .
Mesmerizing in the same kind of way going to the drive in or watching fireworks was as a little kid. As for the art being good, bad, or something in between . . . you decide. Dusk ‘til midnight nightly through May.
