Today’s Contender: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Flavor: Lemon Yogurt
Ladies and Gentleman, we may have a contender . . . While other people rave about Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, I have tried many flavors but they never seem to sit right with me — sometimes they seem a bit grainy, sometimes more about the mix-ins than the cream, something just not right. And while the flavors are always interesting and alluring, they just haven’t proven to be my scoop of choice. Until I tried the Lemon Yogurt. . .
On a day when I was feeling a bit down, the ice cream section at Whole Foods seemed to offer solace. What made me look at the Jeni’s shelf given my past experiences is a bit of a mystery. But I love anything lemon and the Lemon Frozen Yogurt was beckoning. So I picked it up and took it home. So glad I did. It was delicious. Delicious I say.
OK so technically, it’s not ice cream it’s frozen yogurt. But it eats just like ice cream, ice cream with a little tang. It has a better mouth feel than any of her true ice cream flavors. It’s simpler and I’m simply smitten!
Jeni’s doesn’t come cheap. By mail order it’s $12 a pint. At Whole Foods, it’s $9.99 a pint. That’s nearly double the next premium brand in the case. And you’re not paying for packaging as you can see above, one generic single color print job and a sharpie is how she does it. That means you are paying for premium ingredients — real fruit juice, ultra creamy organic yogurt and a touch of cream from grass fed cows.
Go ahead and give it a try. You won’t be sorry. Of course, I’ll still be trying other ice cream flavors just to see if this one really deserves to be on top of the heap. Stick with me . . .
