Well, almost. This is actually it’s cousin otherwise known as the Cuban Reuben: grilled squaw bread, gruyere cheese, mustard, pickle, pulled pork and kraut. THE famous grilled cheese known as The Champ consists of raisin walnut bread, taleggio cheese, beef short ribs, apricot puree and diced tomato. An award winning combination that has inspired the new Greenspan’s Grilled Cheese restaurant in Los Angeles. I chose another combination on the menu only because I had a run in with raisin toast awhile back and haven’t been able to eat it since. Along side are deep fried potato latkes with creme fresh dipping sauce and a hand shaken pineapple cassis soda.
A very casual place with just one table and a stand up counter, I’d say it was good. I don’t know if it was great. I was inspired only to eat half my sandwich if that says anything. Perhaps you’d have better luck ordering “off menu” sure to be a hit with the tourist crowd wanting to be in the know: New York egg creams, ice cream or cheese on your Throwback Apple Pie (that’s a deep fried apple pie from McDonalds’ original vendor) or an inside out grilled cheese sandwich — any menu sandwich with more cheese melted on the outside.
This place has future chain written all over it. So no need to run, there may be one popping up in your neighborhood one day soon.
